The largest corporate emitter in the United States in 2022 was Vistra Energy, having released over 95 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). This accounted for approximately 1.5 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. that year. The second largest carbon polluter was Southern Company.
Vistra emissions
Vistra Energy's annual emissions decreased by 45 percent between 2010 and 2022. The Texas-based electricity and power generation company is now aiming to cut its emissions by 60 percent below 2010 levels by 2030, and reach net zero carbon emissions by mid-century.
U.S. power sector emissions
The electric power sector is the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, behind the transportation sector. The power sector produced around 1.6 GtCO₂ in 2023, accounting for a quarter of the country's total emissions that year.
