Russia produced 9.21 exajoules of coal in 2023, down from 9.35 exajoules in the previous year. Coal represents one of Russia's largest energy sources, although coal power usage has decreased since 1990. Russia also has some of the world's largest coal reserves.
Where is Russian coal produced?
Russian coal mines with the highest total capacity are in the Kemerovo Oblast in West Siberia, where the Kuznetsk Basin (Kuzbass) is located. The largest share of coking coal in the country is produced in Kuzbass. The second-leading coal-producing region is the Krasnoyarsk Krai, which is home to the Kansk-Achinsk basin, among others. Coal mining operations in that region focus on steam coal. Other coal-producing regions in the country include the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Republic of Khakassia, and the Republic of Buryatia.

Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK) is the leading coal producer in Russia. It is an integrated company that emerged by joining several producers in coal-producing regions. Other major Russian companies by coal production are Kuzbassrazrezugol (KRU), which became a division of Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (UMMC) in 2006, and SDS-Ugol, a subsidiary of the holding Siberian Business Union (SBU).
