Actors with the most Oscars for their acting 1929-2025
As of 2025, Katharine Hepburn maintained her lead as the actor with the most Oscar wins of all time. While the "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" star scored four acting accolades during her career, six fellow actors tied for the second spot with three wins each.
Frances McDormand: a household name at the Academy Awards
Frances McDormand won her first Academy Award in 1997 for her leading role in "Fargo". Since then, the actor and producer has become a permanent fixture in the awards circuit, garnering multiple nominations and accolades for her cinematic achievements. After two nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category in 2001 and 2006, Frances McDormand claimed another Best Actress trophy in 2021 for her role in "Nomadland". The drama, which brought home the highest number of awards that year, also marked a milestone for Chloé Zhao, who became the first woman of color to receive the Oscar for Best Director.
Academy Awards face viewership declines
The Academy Awards ceremony is arguably the most prestigious awards show in the entertainment industry. But even though millions of viewers from across the globe tune in to watch the telecast each year, audience figures have been plummeting for the better part of a decade before finally bouncing back. In 2025, Oscars viewership stood at around 19.7 million, marking the highest figure since 2021. On top of that, media outlets continue to provide extensive coverage of the event, while advertising revenue from the Academy Awards has also not dipped below 100 million U.S. dollars since 2015.
