In 2023/24, there were 85,458 police complaint cases recorded in England and Wales, compared with 81,142 in the previous year. Before 2020/21 the year with the most police complaints was 2014/15, when there were 37,105 complaints.

The source adds the following information regarding methodology:
*As complaints were no longer recorded under this regime from 1 February 2020, the 2019/20 count is not a total year count.
**From 2020/21 onwards significant change has been made to the complaints system in this area, widening the definition of a complaint to make the system more accessible. This means many more complaints will now be logged than in previous years.
