Over the years consumers in the United Kingdom (UK) households spent more and more on clothing and footwear purchases, with expenditure marking over 75.5 billion British pounds in 2023, as displayed in the present statistic.

Online share of clothing and footwear sales

While spending on apparel holds steady, the number of stores for clothing and footwear in the UK has dropped in recent years. The likeliest culprit for this trend is the online channel, which currently accounts for over 25 percent of all retail sales made in textile, clothing and footwear stores in Great Britain.

The apparel market in the United Kingdom was estimated to generate a revenue of approximately 70 billion British pounds in 2023, an increase of around 10 billion pounds from the previous year. By 2027 the market was forecast to have grown by a further 10 billion pounds to over 80 billion pounds. When it came to the most popular apparel brands in the UK, sportswear companies led the way with Nike and adidas in the top two spots, with popularity scores of 68 and 66 percent respectively.
