Petrol station brand site volume in the United Kingdom (UK) 2023
In 2023, sites belonging to supermarket chain Sainsbury’s sold the highest volume of petrol per station, at 11,828 kiloliters per annum. The figures clearly show that supermarket forecourts sold the highest volumes of fuel per site in the UK, with Tesco, Morrison’s and Asda following Sainbury’s.
Tesco leads the motor fuel market
Tesco opened its first petrol stations in the UK in 1974 and is now the country’s market leader. In 2023, Tesco had the largest market share of motor fuel sold in petrol stations at nearly 16 percent. Despite selling on average less fuel per site than other supermarkets, Shell had the second largest market share of motor fuel sold with 14.3 percent. This is explained by the British multinational oil and gas company owning one of the greatest number of petrol station sites in the nation.
Supermarket fuel prices cheapest
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, supermarket shares of all fuel sold in the UK were nearly 35 percent, with diesel shares at some 29 percent. Whilst this was a decrease from the previous year, it shows the popularity of supermarket forecourts. Typically, supermarket fuel prices are cheaper than the UK average and can often lead to supermarket “price wars”.
