Petrol station owner type site volume in the United Kingdom (UK) 2023
In 2023, hypermarket groups sold an average of over 10,692 kiloliters of motor fuel. The hypermarket groups, owned and operated by retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrison, had by far the highest average motor fuel volume sold per site while company owned sites and independent dealer owned sites sold much lower volumes.
Hypermarket retailers have significant clout when it comes to setting fuel prices in the UK. Their sheer size and prominence allows them to employ methods that other operators find more difficult to access, such as in-store promotions and incentives run through their respective supermarkets. It is for reasons such as these, that voices within the industry including the Retail Motor Industry Federation, have begun calling for the Office of Fair Trading to conduct an inquiry in to trading practices within the fuel retail industry.
The emergence of the hypermarket fuel retailer is one of many changes taking place in the fuel retail industry, with the declining number of forecourts serving as an indicator of the changing face of fuel retail in the UK.
