This statistic shows the distribution of reasons for rejected payer prescriptions in selected classes in the U.S. in 2013. Quantity limits were responsible for 5.3 percent of rejected payer prescriptions in 2013 in the United States. Rejected prescriptions can also be replaced by a different drug, often a branded drug can be substituted with a generic drug.

Payer rejections are captured in pharmacy point of sale systems and reported to IMS using standardized NCPDP rejection reasons. Patient abandonment reasons are
not categorized in this report but are understood to relate most often to cost, and to convenience.
