Blu-ray discs represented a real visual revolution when they were first introduced to the market. Developed as an extension of DVD discs, Blu-ray discs enable the viewing of high-quality video and audio content. However, the value of Blu-ray sales in France has more than halved in less than ten years, reaching around 80 million euros in 2020.
A declining craze
However, the number of households equipped with a Blu-ray player doubled in France between 2010 and 2019, thereby increasing the potential number of customers. After experiencing a boom in early 2010, the number of Blu-ray units fell slightly over the decade before stabilizing at just under eight billion units sold in 2021. Despite this, the price of Blu-rays, both new releases and existing Blu-rays, remained stable over the same decade and prices fluctuated very little.
A new way of consuming audio media
The DVD market in France is experiencing a similar, albeit more spectacular decline. While DVDs were the format of choice for viewing video content, the value of DVD sales and the number of units sold have fallen sharply over the past decade. While DVD and Blu-ray sales are on an ever-sloping downward trend, French consumers of video content have been shifting to video-on-demand platforms that offer a greater range of choices for less money.
