In 2023, Bertelsmann, active - among others - in the publishing and in the TV sectors, was the largest media group in Germany, with a revenue of 20.17 billion euros. Ströer SE & Co. KGaA, the only out-of-home media player in the list, ranked ninth.
According to the Institute for Media and Communication Policy (Institut für Medien- und Kommunikationspolitik), the media groups in this ranking are defined as companies that create and/or distribute journalistic content, and generate a major share of their revenues from copyrights/licenses and/or advertising. Furthermore, those media groups are taken into account that have major influence on the communication environment of a wide audience.
