When surveyed during the 2023/24 school year, 8.2 percent of children aged 5 to 16 years old said they had participated in rugby in the last week. This marked a decrease from the previous year, when it stood at 8.3 percent. Based on figures going back to 2017/18, participation peaked in 2018/2019, with 9.7 percent.

Among adults who play rugby in England, the number of participants in rugby union totaled around 220,000 in 2023. This was around four times the number of adults who played rugby league, a code of the sport that is primarily played in the north of England.
