In 2022, the rail freight transport volume in Germany increased by 16.3 billion million ton-kilometers (+12.75 percent) since 2020. In total, the rail freight transport volume amounted to 144 billion million ton-kilometers in 2022. This increase was preceded by a declining rail freight transport volume during the period of 2019 and 2020. Rail freight transport refers to the transportation of cargo by train. The types of goods transported in freight cars vary but include bulk cargo, intermodal containers, and general or specialized freight. Rail freight transport can be national or cross between countries linked together by railway network.
