After growing throughout the previous decade, inland freight transport in Germany decreased at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Total tonne-kilometers dropped by almost 4 percent between 2019 and 2020. By 2022, freight volumes increased from the 2020 value and totaled over 510 billion tonne-kilometres.
