Carbon dioxide emissions in Germany 1990-2024

Biggest sources CO₂ emissions

The energy industry was the largest contributor to Germany's CO₂ emissions in 2024, with a share of ** percent of the total. Road transportation followed, accounting for roughly a quarter of emissions. German road transportation emissions totaled *** MtCO₂e in 2024.

Historical CO₂ emissions

Although Germany has cut its emissions considerably in recent decades, it is still one of the biggest CO₂ emitters in history. Since the Industrial Revolution began, Germany has released more than ** GtCO₂ into the atmosphere from fossil fuel combustion. Only the United States, China, and Russia have emitted more.
