The total number of ATMs (automated teller machines) fluctuated drastically in Germany between 2000 and 2023. As of 2023, there were approximately 77,500 ATMs operational in the country. Just the year before, there were 79,000 ATMs in use in Germany. Cash payments are still of high importance in German retail, as they accounted for almost 40 percent of all retail payments in 2022.

The percentage changes have been calculated by Statista; The source significantly changed its database in November 2023. This may mean methodology changes, or not all EU-27 countries reporting the same figures.
Supplementary notes
The figures shown cover ATMs, regardless of function (i.e., ATMs with "all" functions). This means the figures include ATMs that either:
have a cash withdrawal function;
allow for cash deposits;
have contactless options;
can process a credit transfer;
or combine multiple of the above functions into one machine.
Similar to credit card figures, the reporting and tracking of ATMs can vary between countries.Â
