In 2020/2021, Ghana is estimated to have produced about **** thousand metric tons of cocoa beans, the most ever produced by the country. This is expected to increase again in 2023/2024 to about *** thousand metric tons, however.

Top producers of cocoa beans

Although cocoa beans originate from South America, the majority of cocoa bean production is attributed to Africa. In 2021/2022, Africa’s cocoa bean production amounted to around *** million tons. On a country level, the top two producers of cocoa beans are Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, with Côte d'Ivoire producing more than twice the volume of cocoa beans of Ghana.

Global cocoa bean market

The global price of cocoa beans fluctuates from year to year, reaching a maximum of around**************d U.S. dollars per metric ton in mid-2016 and dropping to around ************ U.S. dollars per metric ton in 2017. The Netherlands and Côte d'Ivoire were the two biggest processors of cocoa beans in the 2021/2022 fiscal year.
