Global geothermal power produced in 2022, by country
In 2022, Indonesia ranked second in terms of geothermal power generation with 16.7 gigawatt hours of geothermal energy produced. Indonesia's success in geothermal energy production is further emphasized by its continued expansion, as it added 57 megawatts to its geothermal capacity in 2023, the highest geothermal capacity additions globally that year.
US: leader in geothermal power production
While Indonesia has made significant strides, the United States remains the world leader in geothermal electricity production and installed capacity. In 2022, the U.S. produced 19,142 gigawatt hours of geothermal energy, maintaining its top position. The country's dominance is further illustrated by its cumulative installed capacity of 2,674 megawatts in 2023, far surpassing other nations.
Geothermal energy consumption trends
The global consumption of geothermal energy continues to rise, with worldwide geothermal heat consumption reaching 1,253 petajoules in 2022, up from 1,142.3 petajoules in the previous year. This increase reflects the growing importance of geothermal energy in the renewable heat sector, accounting for 4.2 percent of global renewable heat consumption. China has emerged as a major consumer of geothermal energy, utilizing approximately 1.9 exajoules in 2022, primarily in the form of direct heat consumption.
