Organ transplantation activity per million population in Belgium 2021-2023, by organ

In Belgium, 45.2 kidney transplants per million population were carried out in 2023. The rate of kidney transplant procedures had increased from the preceding years. Liver transplants were the second most carried out transplant procedure in Belgium in 2023 at 29.1 per million, also an increase from 2021 and 2022.  

Waiting list in Belgium

There were 1,186 thousand patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Belgium in 2023, while in 2021 there were 1,130 patients active on the waiting list. Additionally, the number of patients waiting on liver and lung transplants decreased since 2021.  

Activity compared to Europe

Compared to the rest of the EU countries, Belgium had a relatively average rate of kidney transplants. Meanwhile, Belgium had the highest rate of liver transplant procedures in 2023, standing at 29.1 procedures per million population.
