In 2024, South Korea had *** universities and *** junior colleges. Generally, universities offer a four-year curriculum, while junior colleges provide a two- or three-year program focused on technical training.
Decline in universities
The number of universities in South Korea saw significant growth until 2000, after which it gradually declined. This decline is primarily due to the government's university restructuring policy in response to a decreasing school-age population. Notably, the number of junior colleges has consistently decreased since 2005, as many have merged into universities operated by the same corporation or have been reorganized into four-year institutions.
Public and private universities
Higher education institutions in South Korea are categorized into public and private institutions. Public institutions, such as national universities, receive government funding for various projects. Seoul National University, located in Seoul, is one of the country's most prestigious national universities. In contrast, private universities enjoy more administrative flexibility and often collaborate with private companies. For example, Sungkyunkwan University was acquired by the Samsung Group.
The figures do not include distance universities, open universities, corporate universities, and graduate schools. Industrial universities and universities of education are included.
