Retail sales of clothing China 2014-2024
In 2024, the sales value of apparel in China amounted to over 1.07 trillion yuan, up from about 1.04 billion yuan in the previous year. Retail sales of apparel in China have seen steady growth since 2022.
Chinese fashion consumers
The world has witnessed the rise of China’s fashion market in recent years. Chinese per capita spending on clothing and shoes has grown over threefold in the last two decades. In 2024, China remained the world’s second-largest apparel market. Nowadays, cashed-up Chinese fashion consumers value not only good quality but also unique designs. Compared to the older generations, millennials are willing to spend more on clothes.
Rise of domestic brands
With the popularity of China-chic (or "Guochao", a consumption trend where consumers favor products with Chinese characteristics as well as trendy domestic goods), Chinese consumers showed an increasing passion for domestic apparel brands. In 2023, Bosideng held the second-largest market share in China's women’s wear market, positioned just behind Uniqlo. There were 37 listed apparel companies in China, Heilan Home ranked first among them in terms of market value as well as operating income.
