Revenue share of online grocery shopping in the Netherlands 2022-2024
Between 2022 and 2024, online grocery shopping accounted for an increasingly larger share of total grocery retail revenue in the Netherlands. If in the first year online groceries represented just over seven percent of total revenue, in 2024 this figure rose to close to eight percent.
Picnic, Albert Heijn, and Jumbo were the three biggest online supermarkets in the Netherlands in 2023, together taking up almost the totality of the market. Based on survey results, in 2024 consumers' most cited argument not to purchase groceries online was that there was a supermarket already close to home. Another popular reason was that consumers preferred to check the product’s quality before purchasing.
