Over 86 million income tax returns (ITRs) were filed in the assessment year 2024 in India. It was estimated to increase to over 91 million in the year 2025. The number of income taxpayers has more than doubled since 2014.

The assessment year (AY) is the year after the financial year (FY). It is the period when the income earned during FY is assessed and taxed. Both FY and AY start on 1 April and end on 31 March. For instance, for FY 2023-24, the assessment year is AY 2024-25.
