In the financial year 2023, the Paradip port in India had the maximum share of coastal cargo handled across India, at 31 percent. Almost 70 percent of the country's trading value was handled through maritime transport. The port sector of the South Asian country handled over 1.3 billion metric tons of cargo in 2020.

India's financial year begins in April and ends in March. For example, FY 2015 started in April 2014 and ended in March 2015.
Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.
