In 2024, Novartis AG generated around 29 percent of its revenue through its oncology division. About 26 percent of the company’s total revenue was earned through its established brands division.

Novartis AG’s Established brands generated some 13 billion dollars in 2024. The Sandoz division, which creates generic pharmaceuticals and biosimilars, was spun-off in mid-2023, becoming a separate company. Around 74 percent of Novartis' revenues were generated in established markets, while the remainder was earned in emerging growth markets.

Novartis R&D spending

Novartis AG spent around 10 billion U.S. dollars on research and development in 2024. The highest R&D expenses in relation to sales were reported for 2023. That year’s R&D expenditures accounted for roughly one quarter of the company’s total revenue.
