Ranking of popular cat breeds in Sweden 2023, by number of purchased animals
According to a survey, the majority of Swedes did not own a pet. Among pet owners in the country, cats seemed to be the most popular pet animal, enjoying slightly more popularity than dogs. In the popularity ranking of cat breeds, Ragdoll came at first place, as there were approximately 2.4 thousand cats of the breed purchased in Sweden in 2023. In this year, another popular breed was the Maine Coon, with around 1.9 thousand animals. It was followed by the Siberian cat and the Norwegian Forest cat, both breeds with long hair.
Newly registered pet cats
In the period from 2013 to 2023, the number of new registrations of purebred cats in Sweden increased overall. The highest number of newly registered pet cats was in 2021, reaching just over 15 thousand animals. As of 2023, it decreased slightly to a number of roughly 12 thousand cats.
Pet dogs in Sweden
Among pet owners, dogs were also very popular. In recent years, the number of pet dogs registered in Sweden increased constantly. In 2023, the number of dog registrations in the country peaked by reaching over one million.
