This statistic shows the leading protein ingredients used as a share of all meat substitute product launches in Western Europe in 2015. Wheat protein is the most popular protein source for meat alternatives in Western Europe with a 33 percent share of all new meat substitute products, followed by soy protein at 19 percent. While wheat and soy are the most popular, alternative ingredients are evolving, such as the 2.3 percent increase seen in the use of pea protein since 2011.
