Ranking of TV programs in Sweden H1 2024, by number of viewers

The music competition show "Melodifestivalen" is the most popular TV broadcast in Sweden. In the first half of 2024, nearly one third of the entire Swedish population watched the final show. 

Great interest in Melodifestivalen

"Melodifestivalen" determines Sweden’s representative for the "Eurovision Song Contest" (ESC). Both shows are broadcasted of the public service TV channel svt1 and online on SVT Play. The interest of Swedes in the "Eurovision Song Contest" and "Melodifestivalen" is great. A survey from 2019 found that 87 percent of respondents in Sweden had already watched the Eurovision Song Contest.

Melodifestivalen and ESC have a large audience in Sweden

Altogether, almost seven million individuals in Sweden watched at least one broadcast of "Melodifestivalen" in 2019. This is an audience share of 71.3 percent of the entire population in the country. Additionally, Sweden had the highest television audience share of the ESC among all European countries in 2016, followed by Iceland and Belgium.
