The number of primary insured people in Japan's long-term care insurance system reached around 35.9 million in 2024.
Primary insured people in the long-term care insurance system are aged 65 and older. Every citizen over 40 years old in Japan is required to get long-term care insurance. About 80 to 90 percent of costs for nursing care or support services for daily activities are covered by insurance.
