In Spain, the total number of payment cards with a debit function remained relatively stable between 25 and 26 million from 2013 to 2017 before experiencing a significant surge to over 47 million in 2018. Since then, the number of cards has gradually increased year-on-year, reaching approximately 49.26 million in 2021. However, in 2023, it amounted to almost 47 million cards, a slight decline when compared to 2021.

Unlike several countries, card figures for Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden are reported can be found at both the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and the European Central Bank (ECB).
