The number of animated movies produced for movie theaters in Japan amounted to 80 in 2023. The number increased for the third year in a row after a significant drop in 2020 that was mainly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which in many cases led to a postponement of screenings. The number of movies reached new heights in the 2010s and peaked in 2019 with 91 movies that were shown in theaters. One factor that contributed to the increase observed during the decade was the digitalization of production and screening, which made a higher output possible.
