Electricity production in France 2020-2024, by source
In 2024, nuclear was the main energy source of electricity in France, at around 362 terawatt-hours. This figure increased compared to the previous year when it amounted to 320 terawatt-hours. Hydropower was the second-largest energy source in France, with an electricity production of roughly 75 terawatt-hours.
Nuclear power production
France is strongly reliant on nuclear energy for electricity production. In 2022, the unavailability of nuclear reactors due to the revision of France’s nuclear fleet caused a decline in the country's total electricity production. France's nuclear energy production has since recovered, reaching almost 40 terawatt-hours in January 2025.
Renewable energy capacity in France
Total renewable capacity in France has continuously increased since 2010. Hydropower and wind energy were the main renewable energy sources in 2024, followed by solar energy. Solar power capacity has grown almost five-fold over the last 10 years, despite still generating half the electricity produced by wind energy installations in 2024.
