The majority of these were regular Albert Heijn supermarkets, but next to that Albert Heijn also operated AH to go as well as AH XL stores. In April 2025, there were 35 Albert Heijn hypermarkets, the so-called AH XL.
Market share development
Between 2012 and 2024, Albert Heijn’s market share in the Netherlands increased steadily, from 33.7 percent in the first year to 37.7 percent in 2024 – the highest value to date in the reported time period. Despite AH's performance, closest competitor Jumbo managed to double its market share in the same period, from just under 10 percent in 2012 to 20.3 percent in 2024.
Online grocery market share
Albert Heijn dominated not only regular food retail in the Netherlands, it was also among the market leaders in the online grocery market. In 2023, Albert Heijn’s online grocery market share was 37 percent – a decrease in comparison to the previous eight years, but still granting AH second place behind market leader Picnic.
