This statistic shows the answers to a survey question on the leading payment methods in online retail in the Netherlands as of November 2017. The source mentions that 95 percent of respondents use iDEAL when shopping online. iDEAL is an inter-bank system, local to the Dutch market, allowing shoppers to use their bank account for online purchases. It is covered by all major Dutch consumer banks. Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases. In 2016, there were approximately 67 POS transactions per card in Belgium, compared to 98 in the Netherlands and 21 in Luxembourg. Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. More traditional payment means like bank transfers and payments by card at the point of sale for online purchases are still quite popular, but respondents have been using these payment methods less often. One preferred way of conducting money transfers in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands is by card. In 2016, Luxembourg had approximately 216 card payments per capita compared to 151 in Belgium and 232 in the Netherlands. In the third quarter of 2017, the share of NFC payments of all debit card payments was approximately 43 percent. NFC payments were introduced in the Netherlands in 2014 and mainly involves contactless payments made at points of sales, with either a debit card or a mobile phone or payments via QR codes.
