The commercial sector in the United States was responsible for 758 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) from energy consumption in 2023, a decrease of six percent from the previous year. The majority of the commercial sector's total CO₂ emissions are associated with indirect emissions, attributed to the sector based on its share of total purchased electricity. In terms of direct use emissions, the commercial sector emitted 250 MtCO₂ in 2023.
Carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption in the commercial sector in the United States from 1990 to 2023
(in million metric tons)
Figures include the commercial sector's share of electric power CO₂ emissions. Emissions from energy consumption (for electricity and a small amount of useful thermal output) in the electric power sector are allocated to the end-use sectors in proportion to each sector's share of total electricity sales to ultimate customers.
