Share of the European truck market held by DAF in Europe 2012-2023
In 2023, DAF held a market share of 15.6 percent in the heavy truck sector, a slight drop compared to its 2022 record of 17.3 percent. By contrast, DAF accounted for 9.1 percent of sales in the light truck market. Comparatively, Toyota, Volkswagen, and General Motors were the leading commercial vehicle brands worldwide in 2022.Â
DAF production slumps in 2020
While 2020 market shares were stable, DAF was impacted in its production by the worldwide economic situation and manufacturing plants being put to a halt. Before 2020,DAF production volume ramped up in the years following 2014, peaking in 2018. The truck manufacturer had made over 67,000 units of light and heavy commercial vehicles that year, which was an increase of over half its 2014 production. These numbers were however deeply impacted in 2020, where they shrank to 46,600 units produced. This is less than 10 percent above 2014 production and over a quarter less than 2019 data.
Europe holds less than 10 percent of the heavy truck production market
Globally, the truck and commercial vehicle market was dominated by North America and Asia-Oceania. Production volumes have fluctuated since 2011, but Asia-Oceania clearly remained the main region for heavy truck manufacturing, followed by the North American region. Europe was responsible for only 9.24 percent of all heavy trucks produced in 2022.
