Main travel destinations for Swedish outbound travelers 2023, by number of trips
Spain was the most popular travel destination among Swedish international tourists in 2023. In total, residents from the Nordic country took nearly 2.2 million trips to the Spanish territory that year. Sweden's southern neighbor, Denmark, was the second most visited country by Swedish travelers.
International tourism
While Germany is the fourth most visited country among Swedes, Germany is the leading inbound travel market for Sweden. German tourists made approximately 3.6 million overnight stays in 2024, while 3.3 million overnight stays came from Norwegian travelers. Visitors from Denmark spent the third-most nights in Sweden, amounting to around two million overnight stays in the same year.
Domestic tourism
Domestic tourism was more important, as the overnight stays registered in Sweden that came from international tourists accounted for 16.8 million. With the former coronavirus crisis, it appears that Swedes had started vacationing even more at home. When asked about which countries they would visit during the pandemic, Sweden was the most stated answer among the respondents, followed by Spain.
