In 2023, the most watched television program in Finland was the Independence Day Reception at the Presidential Palace on the 6th of December, with over 2.5 million viewers. The 6th of December is the Finnish Independence Day (Finnish: Itsenäisyyspäivä). It is a national holiday where Finns celebrate Finland’s declaration of independence from the Russian Empire in 1917. The News at ten, during the halftime of the 'Hockey Night in Canada', followed with around 1.5 million viewers.
Yle Areena is the leading subscription-based streaming service in Finland
According to a 2024 survey, Yle Areena was the most popular subscription-based video streaming service in Finland. Roughly 54 percent of Finns subscribed to the streaming service in 2024. Yle Areena is part of Finland’s national public broadcasting company.
Linear TV is still popular in Finland
Despite the growing streaming market, the percentage of people from Finland watching linear TV on a weekly basis had stayed at around 85 percent since 2017, according to a survey from 2021. This high percentage also shows in the viewing of traditional commercial television channels, where Finland reached more than 80 percent. The other surveyed Nordic countries, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark had lower shares of respondents.
