Post-consumer plastics waste treatment in Europe 2006-2022, by method

In 2022, an estimated 32.3 million metric tons of post-consumer plastic waste was collected across Europe (EU-27 +3). Of this total, 8.7 million metric tons were recycled, with this method overtaking landfilling for the first time in the recorded period. Nevertheless, energy recovery remains the main method of post-consumer plastic waste treatment in the region, accounting for some 16 million metric tons.
