OLED smartphones display market share worldwide 2018

Samsung accounted for a massive 93.4 percent of all smartphone OLED display shipments around the world in 2018. The South Korean tech giant earned over five billion U.S. dollars from the sale of these displays in the first quarter of 2018 alone.

OLED displays

OLED or organic light-emitting diode is a type of digital display technology that involves the use of organic compounds which emit light in response to contact with an electric current. The technology is most widely used in smartphones but can also be found in televisions and the display screens on other electronic devices. As of 2019, worldwide production capacity for mobile OLED displays was projected to amount to nearly 20 million square meters and is expected to continue to grow rapidly. OLED is a particularly useful technology for use in smartphones and mobile devices given that it can be manufactured in both flexible and rigid variations.

Samsung Display

Samsung’s display panel manufacturing business has long been a staple of its operations, earning the company tens of billions of dollars in revenue each year. Not only does Samsung produce the displays for its own consumer electronics products, but it also serves as the display manufacturer for many consumer electronics products sold by other brands such as Microsoft, HP, and Lenovo.
