Maritime cargo traffic of Port of Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium) by type 2022

As of 2022, containers had the greatest share of the maritime cargo traffic at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Liquid bulk accounted for over 90.6 million tons of the total cargo which passed through the port in 2022, whereas there was just some 13.2 million tons in breakbulk traffic the same year.

Merging of the Antwerp and Bruges ports

In 2021, the companies operating the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge (Bruges) decided to undergo a merger to strengthen their position in the European and global supply chain. The merger took a year to finish and the two ports finally merged in 2022, creating the Antwerp-Bruges Port Authority that now manages the port. The Antwerp-Bruges Port has become the leading port for vehicle trade and ranked second in total cargo throughput among European ports in 2021.
