Almost 9,640 supermarkets and grocery stores were operating in Australia by the end of the 2024 financial year, around 3,170 of which were located in New South Wales. Victoria was home to the next highest number of supermarkets and grocery stores countrywide.

This marked a substantial increase of more than 44 billion Australian dollars since 2015. New South Wales leads in revenue generation, recording approximately 43.1 billion Australian dollars in 2024.

Leading supermarket chains

Australia’s supermarket and grocery retail industry is led by two dominant domestic players: Woolworths Group and Coles Group. Aldi and IGA (Metcash) also enjoy popularity but hold grocery retailer market shares of less than 10 percent due to the ongoing dominance of the big two supermarkets. As of 2025, Woolworths Group had the largest store network across popular supermarkets, grocery stores, and convenience stores in Australia.
