In the fiscal year 2024, the annual proceeds from the Sports Promotion Lottery (toto and BIG lottery) amounted to approximately ***** billion Japanese yen. Introduced in 2001, the Sports Promotion Lottery or 'toto' lottery in Japan is a lottery allowing sports betting on outcomes of Japan's professional soccer league (J. League) and foreign football matches. The goal of the lottery is the generation of funding through a portion of sales proceeds to subsidize sports-promotion projects of municipalities and sports organizations.
