This statistic displays the electrical generation in Great Britain from 2014 to 2018, by select fuel types. The generation from natural gas increased significantly in 2016 when compared to the previous year to 127.3 terawatt-hours. Since then, generation has declined to to 115.4 terawatt-hours.
In comparison, the electricity generation from coal energy declined annually and by 2018 amounted to 15.4 terawatt-hours. This coincides with the planned phase out of coal generation by 2025. In 1970, coal production from deep mining stood at 136.7 million metric tons. As of 2017, this amount had declined to just 20,000 metric tons.
Whilst coal generation has been gradually declining, energy from renewable sources such as solar, wind and biomass has been on the rise.
