This statistic shows the results of a survey on the distribution of populism amongst eligible voters in Germany in 2020 by left-right orientation. In accordance with the definition provided by the study, 1.6 percent of eligible left-oriented voters in Germany were classified as populist. In order to classify them as belonging to a certain political camp, respondents were asked to place themselves on a left-right scale.

Populism amongst eligible voters in Germany in 2020, by left-right orientation
In this study populism is defined as a certain understanding of politics and democracy, its norms, institutions and procedures. A distinguishing feature is the idea of the “true people” on one side and the “corrupt elite” on the other. Additionally, views which are anti-establishment, anti-pluralism and pro sovereignty of the people. According to the authors of the study, all three views are supposed to be represented simultaneously to qualify as populist views. Further definitions are available in the report.
