Best-selling PEV models in Europe 2024
Tesla’s Model Y was the best-selling electric car in Europe as of December 2024, beating the Tesla Model 3 to first place. The Škoda Enyaq, Volvo EX30, and Audi Q4 e-tron rounded off the top five.
Global competition heats up
While Tesla currently leads in Europe, the global electric vehicle landscape is evolving rapidly. BYD has overtaken Tesla as the world's best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer, capturing nearly a quarter of the market share in 2024. This shift underscores the increasing competition from Asian brands, particularly in the Chinese market. Despite this, Tesla's Model Y remains the world's most popular plug-in electric vehicle, with global sales reaching approximately 1.2 million units in 2024.
European automakers respond
European manufacturers are intensifying their efforts to compete in the electric vehicle market. The Volkswagen Group delivered around 744,800 battery-electric vehicles worldwide in 2024, with Europe serving as its primary market. Notably, Volkswagen's ID.3 and ID.4 models were among the best-selling plug-in electric vehicles in Europe that year. However, the company faced challenges, including a recall of 42,300 hybrid cars in 2022, highlighting the complexities of transitioning to electric mobility. As the market evolves, European brands continue to adapt their strategies to maintain competitiveness in this rapidly changing industry.
