That year, a total of 2,762 animal and plant species native to Ecuador were registered on the IUCN Red List as under threat of extinction. Mexico and Brazil had the second and third ecosystems with the most threatened species in the region, respectively, each registering more than two thousand species. Cuba, in turn, ranks first when it comes to the number of endangered animal species in Caribbean countries.
