Change in greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union 1990-2023, by source
Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU-27) decreased across a number of sectors between 1990 and 2023. The biggest reduction was in the public electricity and heat production sector, where emissions fell by roughly 660 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). This reduction is attributable to an increase in renewable energy, and a move away from coal consumption. In comparison, road transport emissions were some 140 MtCO₂e higher in 2023, relative to 1990.
